What is the cloud?

The cloud described in short is a collection of IT infrastructure that can be accessed over the internet. Many companies prefer hosting their IT services on the cloud because they can create a fully functional IT system without acquiring the hardware to do so.
Back in the days, one had to acquire the hardware and software to build a fully functional data centre to run their IT programs. To source this would be quite costly, as it had a large up-front cost to get the hardware, and a very time-consuming process in sourcing the right hardware and operating software. The reason this was so time consuming was that to source the right hardware and OS that enabled business capabilities now and, in the future, they had to do a thorough investigation.
By outsourcing this to a cloud service provider business no longer had to go through all of this. They can now register on the homepage of one of the big providers and have access to all the infrastructure they wish to. There is no up-front investment as you mostly pay for the computational power that you will utilize of the providers data centre, and they will take care of optimisation.
Leaving you with the opportunity to focus more on the value adding aspects of your business, not having to facilitate large IT resources to get the IT capabilities you need. However, sourcing the right suppliers can be very important to match your priorities.
